Former Spanish head of government Mariano Rajoy triggered a diplomatic dispute with a disparaging remark about the French national football team, prompting the French Embassy in Madrid and French politicians to condemn the statement as racist.
In a guest contribution for the online outlet El Debate, Rajoy wrote over the weekend that the French team had a "squad of the highest level," "albeit without Frenchmen." The politician from the conservative People's Party (PP) appeared to be alluding to the high proportion of players with a migration background in the French squad. Rajoy was head of government of Spain from 2011 to 2018.
The French Embassy in Madrid responded on Tuesday with an unusually sharp statement. "All players of the French national team are French," it said. "Of the 26 players, 23 were born in France. The three who were born abroad are also French." With this, the embassy rejected the insinuation that a substantial part of the squad was not truly French.
