ÖFB team manager Ralf Rangnick left open before the Austrian national team's pivotal match against Israel who would lead the team onto the field as captain, and once again named Michael Gregoritsch as the most likely candidate.

Background of the captaincy debate

The selection of the captain is one of the most discussed personnel decisions in Austrian football. The day before the match in the second phase of ÖFB Team 2.0 under Rangnick, much once again pointed to Michael Gregoritsch, who had most recently worn the armband on several occasions. The German, however, did not want to commit himself definitively when asked.

„Weil er spielt“, Rangnick explained his previous approach, citing the 30-year-old's sporting form as the decisive criterion. A final decision on the captaincy would, according to the German, continue to be made from week to week. This means that the role of ÖFB captain remains an open topic ahead of this match as well.
