Real Madrid signs Dumfries from Inter Milan for 20 million euros

The right-back's career path

In the summer of 2021, Dumfries moved from PSV Eindhoven to the Nerazzurri for €14.25 million. That means Real Madrid are paying well below the player's listed market value of €25.00 million – the fee is even lower than the amount Inter Milan paid PSV five years ago. Dumfries also joins a list of notable Dutchmen at the Spanish record champions such as Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder, or Clarence Seedorf. He is the ninth in the service of the Royals.

The attack-minded right-back struggled with ankle problems last season and had surgery at the end of the year, which kept him out until March. The statistics reflected that: in 2025/26, he made only 28 appearances, scoring five goals and providing two assists. The 30-year-old Dumfries featured in all four matches for the Elftal at the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Burdened World Cup and injury concerns

Dumfries, who participated with the Netherlands in the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada but was unable to prevent their elimination in the round of 16, still made four appearances at the tournament. The round-of-16 exit against Morocco (2:3 on penalties) meant an early end to the World Cup journey for the Elftal.

In Madrid, a battle for the right-back spot is expected next season. Dumfries will compete for the right-back position with Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Englishman joined Real Madrid from FC Liverpool a year ago and fell well short of expectations with five assists in 30 appearances.

Competition with Alexander-Arnold

Real also reacted with the signing to the gap left by the departure of Daniel Carvajal. Daniel Carvajal, who missed numerous matches this season due to injury, has left the club after 13 years. The transfer is also a signal to Alexander-Arnold that the Madrid side want to continue strengthening this position.

Real have only once paid more for a right-back: in 2018, Álvaro Odriozola arrived from Real Sociedad for €32 million. The current fee puts the Dumfries transfer well below that record, but above the expectations normally placed on a right-back of his advanced age.

Dumfries is the fifth high-profile new signing at the Royals, whose total transfer spending, again including the Portuguese, now stands at €90 million. Real Madrid is registered in LaLiga with a squad of 30 players and a total market value of €1.36 billion under José Mourinho. Inter Milan, by contrast, list a squad of 25 players and are coached in Serie A by Cristian Chivu. The Nerazzurri's total market value stands at €705.80 million.

Inter Milan's most recent transfer is listed as Manuel Akanji. This is the Milan club's early response to Dumfries' departure, in order to adequately refill the right-back spot. The Italians' transfer list thus points to a signing intended to fill the direct gap left by Dumfries.

Dutch footprints at Real Madrid

Dumfries was born on April 18, 1996, making him 30 years old. He is the first Dutch player in many years, after Rafael van der Vaart, to once again wear the shirt of the Royals. The last player to wear Real's shirt was Rafael van der Vaart from 2008 to 2010.

With the signing of Dumfries and the other new arrivals, the Madrid side are pursuing the goal of attacking at the very top in LaLiga and on the international stage again next season. Mourinho's squad overhaul is not yet complete with these additions; further movement is expected in the current transfer window.

What is clear is that Dumfries will wear the white shirt of the Royals from the new season onwards and will be looking to compete for titles alongside high-profile teammates. This brings an end to a five-year spell in Milan for the right-back, during which he won two league titles and established himself as one of Serie A's most eye-catching full-backs.
