Germany's public debt rose to a record level of 2,662.2 billion euros at the end of 2025, corresponding to a per capita debt of 31,887 euros.

As the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced, the total debt of the federal government, states, municipalities, and social security, including all extra-budgetary funds, grew by 151.4 billion euros or six percent compared to the level at the end of 2024. Per capita, this represents an increase of 1,821 euros within one year.

The largest share of the total debt is borne by the federal government with 1,840.4 billion euros. This corresponds to an increase of 6.2 percent compared to the previous year. The states together reached 624.9 billion euros, an increase of 2.9 percent.
