Austria's domestic tourism has started well into the summer season according to the Austrian Economic Chambers, with May overnight stays reaching a record high, while bookings in June are mixed according to industry representative Georg Imlauer.

Austrian tourism recorded the highest May figure since records began, according to Statistik Austria. Overnight stays were 12 percent above the comparable figure from the previous year. Speaking on the Ö1-Morgenjournal, WKÖ hoteliers' chairman Georg Imlauer nonetheless described the season so far as merely "satisfactory," tempering any possible euphoria.

Mixed Balance Sheet for June

For June, Imlauer painted a differentiated picture. He described the booking situation in cities as relatively good, while vacation regions fell short of expectations. Overall, the booking situation was "still room for improvement." He hoped that bookings would still come in over the course of the month: "Wir hoffen, dass wir im Laufe des Monats noch Buchungen bekommen werden."
