Researchers classify the abuse allegations against the former Essen Cardinal Franz Hengsbach (1910–1991) as well-documented and plausible based on initial findings of a comprehensive study.

A scientific investigation commissioned by the Diocese of Essen has reassessed the allegations against the long-serving Bishop of the Diocese of Essen and co-founder of the relief agency Adveniat, Cardinal Franz Hengsbach. As the interim report presented on Thursday in Munich shows, the abuse allegations against the Essen Cardinal Franz Hengsbach (1910-91), which became known in 2023, are considered "gut belegt und als plausibel einzustufen".

Specifically, the study assumes that in three cases in the 1950s through 1980s, Hengsbach exercised sexualized violence against young girls. According to the information, he is said to have, among other things, touched girls on the breast and forced a 16-year-old to perform sexual acts. Overall, the researchers accuse Hengsbach of having sexually assaulted three girls and four boys between the 1950s and 1980s; in four cases they consider the allegations credible.
