Austria's retail sector recorded a real revenue decline in the first half of 2026, and economic researchers as well as the Economic Chamber look toward the second half with dampened expectations.

Austria's retail sector has started 2026 with a real revenue decline. As the Economic Chamber (WKO) announced on Tuesday, nominal revenues did decline only slightly, but after adjusting for inflation there was a noticeable decrease. Retail is thus joining a broad economic weakening phase that has affected several industries.

Peter Voithofer from the Institut für Österreichs Wirtschaft (iföw) was restrained at the presentation of the half-year balance sheet. For the second half of the year, the motto is "Die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt." However, "many indicators are rather negative and no immediate economic upturn is to be expected," Voithofer tempered expectations. He pointed out that classic leading indicators such as incoming orders and consumer climate continued to be weak.
