Riot Saturday in Vienna: Police speak of escalation after clash between right-wing extremists and counter-demonstration

The police toll at Stephansplatz was significant: There was one provisional arrest under the Administrative Penalties Act, six reports — five of them criminal and one administrative — as well as four injured police officers, three of whom could no longer continue their duty. In a statement on Sunday, the authority spoke of an attempt to prevent an immediate confrontation. "Es wurde versucht, eine unmittelbare Konfrontation zu verhindern und die Personengruppe wurde zum Verlassen des Bereiches der Standkundgebung aufgefordert", the statement said.

Unannounced march through the inner city

In parallel, an unannounced demo march caused a stir in the afternoon. Already at around 1:50 p.m., an unannounced group gathered in the area of Brigittenauer Sporn, according to police. The participants marched from Brigittenau via the Schemerl Bridge and Nußdorfer Platz to Döbling. Only afterward were larger numbers of police units reportedly on site, carrying out 35 identifications. The Döbling toll included one report against unknown persons under the Assembly Act, two reports under the Pyrotechnics Act, and one report for disturbance of order.

In Vienna-Döbling, the mood was apparently heated. Reports of an oppressive experience accumulated in forums and social media. "Echt beängstigend so etwas", one man wrote in the forum. Recordings also circulated immediately after the event, which DER STANDARD was able to view. According to these, the anti-constitutional IB was able to hold its traditional boxing match around the summer demo in the evening.

On Instagram, the account of the Freedom Youth (FJ) Vienna as well as that of the Carinthian FJ chairman Viktor Erdesz, who was expelled from the FPÖ, briefly featured a video of an "Anschlag" on the hut of the Burschenschaft Olympia in the 6th district. The now-deleted clip, timestamped 9:07 p.m., states: "mehrere FJ-Funktionäre betroffen".

The FPÖ Vienna, whose youth apparently celebrated with the right-wing extremists, immediately spoke out about "linksextremer Gewalt". The party's response stands in contrast to reports according to which assaults also occurred among sympathizers of the right-wing extremists. Observers point to an attack on two uninvolved young men after last year's IB demo in the subway, as well as to an antisemitic assault in the second district in 2024, where a Jew had his traditional shtreimel ripped off his head.

Police operation and toll

The police attempted to defuse the situation through early intervention, according to their statement. Only after larger numbers of police arrived on the scene was it possible to calm the situation. The authority announced it would further evaluate the incidents and initiate proceedings. Meanwhile, the political classification of the events continues to be debated.

The State Police Directorate Vienna pointed to the temporal density of the assemblies and the partially unannounced demo marches, which had made coordinated intervention more difficult. The concentration on Stephansplatz and the districts of Brigittenau and Döbling also shows that the protests extended across several parts of the city.

The police emphasized that the officers had acted in a de-escalating manner. The provisional arrest of one person at Stephansplatz was made under the Administrative Penalties Act; the criminal reports were directed against several suspects. The officers' injuries ranged from minor bruises to injuries leading to termination of duty. Three of the four injured officers were unable to continue their service.

The cooperation between police and public prosecution will show in the coming weeks which of the reported matters can be substantiated. The proceedings for violations of the Assembly Act and the Pyrotechnics Act remain open. The question of to what extent the FPÖ Vienna is distancing itself from the events also remains unanswered.
