Beijing, 23 August 2026

Hundreds of humanoid robots gathered in Beijing on 23 August 2026 for the World Humanoid Robot Games, where teams from China and abroad competed in track events and a dexterity contest that produced both new records and visible mechanical failures.

The opening day of competition in the Chinese capital drew entries from Chinese research labs, universities, and consumer brands as well as overseas teams from the United States and other countries. Spectators at the venue watched humanoid machines attempt sprints, relays, and football-style matches, while a parallel arena hosted the so-called Dexterous Hand Challenge, which required robots to manipulate everyday objects with human-like grippers.

The dexterity contest, as described in event documentation, included assembling tools, weighing powder, stacking blocks, hammering nails, opening bottles, unpacking parcels, handling objects with tweezers, and connecting cables. The challenge was designed to benchmark fine-motor performance rather than raw speed, and several Chinese teams reported improvements over previous demonstrations staged in Shanghai and at industry exhibitions earlier in the year.
