At the Grand Slam tennis tournament in New York, Austrian Jurij Rodionov has made it through the second qualifying round of the US Open. With a clear 6:2, 3:6, 6:1 victory over Portugal's Frederico Ferreira Silva, he advanced to the third and final qualifying round in Flushing Meadows.

The Austrian Jurij Rodionov won the second qualifying round of the US Open qualifiers in Flushing Meadows on Wednesday, making him the only red-white-red player still in contention for a spot in the main draw.

Rodionov defeated Portuguese qualifier Frederico Ferreira Silva 6:2, 3:6, 6:1, advancing to the decisive third qualifying round of the year's final Grand Slam tournament. In Flushing Meadows, where the main draw of the US Open begins on Monday, the Lower Austrian is the last remaining Austrian starter in the men's qualifying field.

The first set went almost exactly as the Austrian would have wished. With two breaks and the loss of his own serve, Rodionov secured the opening set clearly at 6:2. In the second stanza, Ferreira Silva raised his level, making the match more even with powerful groundstrokes. After losing the second set, however, Rodionov recovered and dominated the third set 6:1, deciding the match in his favor after roughly an hour and a half.
