Romania’s ruling coalition between the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the National Liberal Party (PNL) has collapsed after the PSD issued an ultimatum demanding Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan’s resignation, accusing his reforms of impoverishing the population.

Reform Dispute Triggers Coalition Breakdown

The crisis erupted after the PSD leadership gave Bolojan 72 hours to step down or face the withdrawal of its ministers from the government. The party cited his structural reforms and austerity measures as the primary reason, claiming they had "das Volk verarmt" ("impoverished the people"). Bolojan, however, defended his policies, arguing that he had dismantled "Privilegien und Seilschaften" ("privileges and crony networks").

The conflict stems from deep divisions over economic policy. Bolojan, a liberal reformer, was appointed prime minister in May 2025 following the resignation of former PSD leader Marcel Ciolacu. His government inherited a record budget deficit of 9.3% of GDP, a consequence of pre-election spending sprees by the previous administration.

President Seeks Pro-European Solution

President Nicusor Dan acknowledged the political turmoil, describing the positions of PSD and PNL as "eindeutig unversöhnbar" ("clearly irreconcilable"). He pledged to pursue consultations to find a "Formel für eine proeuropäische Regierung" ("formula for a pro-European government") but admitted the challenge of bridging the gap between factions with "völlig unterschiedliche Standpunkte" ("completely different viewpoints").
