Bucharest, Romania — May 5, 2026
Romania’s government, led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, was ousted in a parliamentary no-confidence vote on May 5, 2026, less than a year after taking office, following opposition to its austerity measures and privatization plans.
Reform Agenda Sparks Political Crisis
The Bolojan administration had implemented a series of reforms aimed at reducing Romania’s high budget deficit, including tax increases and subsidy cuts. The deficit had ballooned under the previous social democratic government, leaving the new coalition with little fiscal flexibility. Among the most contentious policies were plans to privatize loss-making state-owned enterprises, which critics argued were being sold fraudulently while supporters saw the move as necessary to curb inefficiency.
