Sofia, Bulgaria — April 3, 2026 A Russian rhythmic gymnast, Sofia Ilterjakowa, ignited a diplomatic incident after failing to face the Ukrainian flag during a medal ceremony at the World Cup in Sofia, prompting a formal protest from the Ukrainian team.

The Incident

Sofia Ilterjakowa, 15, won a silver medal in the hoop exercise at the World Cup in Sofia, Bulgaria, while Ukrainian gymnast Taisija Onofrijtschuk took gold. During the medal ceremony, Ilterjakowa did not turn to face the Ukrainian flag when the country’s national anthem was played.

The Ukrainian team swiftly filed a protest with the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG), accusing Ilterjakowa of deliberately disrespecting their flag and demanding her silver medal be revoked. They also questioned her neutral status, as Russian athletes have been competing under neutral flags due to international sanctions.

Reactions and Defense

Tatjana Sergajewa, coach of the Russian team, defended Ilterjakowa, stating that the young gymnast was participating in her first major competition and may not have been aware of the protocol. "She is new to this level of competition and might not have understood all the details of the ceremony," Sergajewa explained.

The Ukrainian delegation dismissed this explanation, arguing that such behavior was unacceptable regardless of experience. "This was a clear provocation," a spokesperson for the Ukrainian team said. "Athletes must respect the symbols of other nations, especially in such a sensitive context."
