Borussia Dortmund central defender Nico Schlotterbeck suffered a torn interior ligament in his left ankle during Germany's 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast on Saturday in Toronto and will miss the rest of the 2026 World Cup.

As the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed on Sunday, the 26-year-old sustained the serious injury in the second group-stage match after already receiving treatment in the 15th minute and being substituted at halftime for Antonio Rüdiger. "It looks definitely not so good - unfortunately," head coach Julian Nagelsmann had said in an initial reaction immediately after the match. An examination on Sunday was to provide more precise information on the severity of the injury.
