Schumann defends draft on wage transparency against bureaucracy accusations

The politician pointed out that more transparency in wages and salaries creates trust and strengthens Austria as a business location in the long term. Employees need reliable information in order to be able to conduct salary negotiations on an equal footing, she argued.

From the Chamber of Commerce as well as from the ranks of the ÖVP, criticism of the draft had previously been voiced. Among other things, objections were raised to additional reporting obligations and a high level of administrative effort that threatened to burden small and medium-sized enterprises in particular. Content of the draft

Schumann counters that wage transparency is an effective instrument against existing wage gaps and addresses a long-overdue need for action. She also referred to EU requirements that obligate member states to strengthen wage transparency. A national solo effort is not necessary, but overdue, she said.

At the center of the draft, according to Schumann, are information rights for employees as well as disclosure and reporting obligations for employers. Among other things, it is planned that employees can request information about the average pay of comparable colleagues. Companies above a certain size should also regularly publish data on gender-specific wage differences.
