The European climate service Copernicus has registered an average sea surface temperature not previously measured. The climate scientist Samantha Burgess announced a new record value that lies significantly above the long-term average of previous summers, according to the Austrian news portal APA.
The mean sea surface temperature (SST for short) is calculated daily on the basis of satellite and measurement buoy data. In recent years, climate services have already documented a steady warming; according to Copernicus, the current value continues this trend.
What the SST values show
As contributing factors, the researchers cite the weather cycle El Niño in the Pacific as well as persistent greenhouse gas emissions. The Pacific is considered the largest ocean on Earth and influences the global climate through heat exchange with the atmosphere.
