Vienna, April 26, 2026 Senior advocacy leaders from Austria’s major political parties have united in condemning proposed budget cuts they say unfairly target pensioners, accusing the government of treating retirees as a "cash machine" for fiscal consolidation.
Opposition to Pension Cuts Grows
Ingrid Korosec, president of the Austrian Seniors' Association (ÖVP), and Birgit Gerstorfer, head of the Pensioners' Association (SPÖ), issued separate statements slamming the government’s austerity plans. Both leaders argued that pensioners are being forced to shoulder disproportionate financial burdens.
Korosec cited a report from the Parliamentary Budget Service indicating that retirees have already contributed approximately €8.4 billion to budget stabilization through measures like partial pensions, adjustments to corridor pensions, increased health insurance contributions, and capped pension adjustments. She reiterated her demand for a "volle Pensionsanpassung für alle" (full pension adjustment for all).
