Seven Arrests After Robbery Spree in Vienna – Police Solve May Hold-Ups

The victims consistently described being attacked by three to five perpetrators, partly armed with pistols and masked with balaclavas. The robbers made off with cash and valuables. The mode of operation was similar in all cases, which early on pointed to a series, according to investigators.

Investigations and Video Surveillance

The Vienna State Criminal Police Office launched extensive investigations. In the course of the work, numerous victim and witness interviews were conducted and extensive video evaluations carried out. Eventually, a vehicle came into the investigators' sights that was allegedly used in the offenses. During a traffic check, the car was stopped, allowing police to identify further suspects.

At that time, the intervening officers were already aware that it was the vehicle being sought. A vehicle that was allegedly used in the robberies was tracked down. It was stopped and inspected as part of a traffic check.

Confessions and Motive

During their interrogations, the suspects cited boredom and financial hardship as their motive. Two of the tracked-down suspects turned themselves in voluntarily to police on June 2 and confessed. The remaining suspects had already been arrested earlier, before the last fugitive suspect – a 28-year-old – could be tracked down and arrested in the area of Schultheßgasse.

The arrest of the last remaining fugitive suspect was carried out by officers of the Operations Group for the Combating of Street Crime (EGS). According to investigators, the arrested men hold Austrian, Serbian, and Syrian citizenship. With this, investigators say they have identified all the alleged perpetrators of the series.

Arrest of the Last Suspect

Investigators assess the success of the manhunt as the result of a complex combination of witness interviews, video evaluations, and targeted surveillance. The investigations by the Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office are ongoing, particularly regarding the exact contributions of the individual suspects and possible links to other offenses.

The Vienna Police views the case as evidence of the effectiveness of cooperation between the State Criminal Police Office, the EGS, and the Public Prosecutor's Office. Given the discharge of firearms in two of the hold-ups, investigators emphasize that the arrests also served public safety. The victims have already been provided with support, according to the information provided.

Background on the Security Situation

In total, seven men aged between 18 and 28 were arrested. Charges will be brought by the Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office upon completion of the investigations.

The incident also throws a spotlight on the security situation in Vienna's western districts. Local observers point out that armed robberies in residential districts such as Hietzing and Penzing have not been uncommon in recent years, but a series of this scale stands out.
