Shots fired in Buxtehude: Homicide squad investigates – suspect arrested

The injured man was initially taken to Elbe Klinikum Buxtehude with life-threatening injuries. Later, police transferred him to Asklepios Klinikum Harburg under police protection. According to investigators, he is no longer in mortal danger, but his condition remained critical the day after the incident.

Care for the Victim

Police cordoned off the crime scene in Buxtehude's city center extensively. Numerous emergency services, including heavily armed officers, were deployed. Public transport in the city center was temporarily suspended.

During the night, armed police stormed an apartment in the multi-family building on Bahnhofstraße, where traces had led. However, the apartment was empty according to police. Investigators still consider the apartment relevant.

Homicide Squad Takes Over

Due to the severity of the incident, police established a homicide squad. The motives behind the act are under investigation, a police spokesperson told NDR. Verbatim: "The motives behind the act are under investigation," said the spokesperson.

Approximately two hours after the shots were fired, emergency services arrested a 42-year-old suspect in Neu Wulmstorf, Harburg district, around 9:15 PM. According to police and the public prosecutor's office, a possible connection between the arrested individual and the incident in Buxtehude is being examined. The extent to which the suspect might be involved in the incident remains unclear.

Arrest in Neu Wulmstorf

Police units from Hamburg were deployed at both hospitals. A police spokesperson explained that such protective measures are mandatory in cases of attempted homicide. Relatives of the victim arrived at the Harburg hospital; the situation remained absolutely peaceful according to the spokesperson.

Police did not initially comment to NDR on the identity of the fleeing shooters or a possible connection between the victim and the perpetrators. The homicide squad is continuing its investigations at the crime scene and in the surrounding area.
