Somali referee Omar Artan was turned away by US authorities at Miami airport and will not be participating as an official at the soccer World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

Turned away at the airport

The 34-year-old Omar Artan, who had been nominated this year by the African Football Confederation as one of seven African referees for the World Cup, was set to become the first Somali ever to officiate at a World Cup. Instead, he was questioned for eleven hours at the airport by the US border protection agency about his travels and the political situation in Somalia, with reports indicating that the Islamist militia Al-Shabaab also came up. He was subsequently placed in a single-occupancy cell and had to continue his journey to Turkey.
