Vienna, 01 October 2026

SPÖ federal party leader Andreas Babler met with the state party chiefs of the Social Democratic Party of Austria in Vienna on Wednesday, with Burgenland Governor Hans Peter Doskozil also present.

The meeting took place at the SPÖ's federal party headquarters and had been regarded in advance as a litmus test for Babler's leadership. Party executive board member Doris Bures had prepared the meeting together with Babler, according to party circles. According to participants, the focus was on the party's future strategic direction and preparations for upcoming state election campaigns.

The participation of Hans Peter Doskozil, who leads the SPÖ Burgenland and has been regarded for months as an internal counterweight to Babler, had apparently not been taken for granted in advance. Observers interpreted his presence as a signal of a fundamental willingness to engage in dialogue. Vienna's Mayor Michael Ludwig, who is also considered an influential state party chief, also took part.
