Tübingen, 28 May 2026
After a public debate over the cost of a temporary ramp for para table tennis player Cary Hailfinger, numerous sponsors have come forward in Tübingen offering to cover the expenses.
The dispute began when the city of Tübingen planned its annual sports awards ceremony, the Sportlerehrung, for June 30 in the auditorium of the Mensa Uhlandstraße. The stage there is only accessible via stairs, a problem for Hailfinger, the German vice-champion in para table tennis doubles, who predominantly uses a wheelchair.
Mayor Boris Palmer, who is independent, initially rejected a temporary ramp, citing costs and organizational disadvantages. According to reports, a one-time rental would have cost around 1,200 euros, which the city considered too much for its strained budget. Palmer also noted that using a ramp would have required 40 guests in the hall to be moved.
