Frank-Walter Steinmeier is traveling to China, while Friedrich Merz is departing from Berlin for Singapore, Japan, and South Korea.
Steinmeier’s and Merz’s trips lead to the same world region but pursue different goals. Steinmeier wants to promote balanced relations in China. Merz is focusing his trip on Singapore, Japan, and South Korea.
According to the Federal President’s Office, the central message of Steinmeier’s visit to China is: "Wir wollen nicht Abkopplung von China, sondern wir wollen enge und belastbare wirtschaftliche Beziehungen, aber eben solche, die im Interesse beider Seiten sind".
Steinmeier’s Message to China
The federal government is therefore placing the expansion of economic relations at the center. At the same time, the aim is to prevent Germany from unilaterally severing its relations with China. The connections sought are intended to serve both sides.
