Suspect in Los Angeles Inferno Allegedly Held Grudge Against the Wealthy

The Fire Disaster Unfolds

The fire in Pacific Palisades broke out shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day 2025 near a popular hiking trail. Jonathan R. had dropped off passengers in the affluent neighborhood shortly before. The flames spread rapidly, killing twelve people. Initially, firefighters appeared to have the situation under control, but strong winds reignited the blaze a week later, and the fire expanded toward Malibu.

In total, 31 people died in a series of fires across the greater Los Angeles area in January 2025, and over 160,000 structures were destroyed. During interrogations, the suspect allegedly hinted that the attack on Pacific Palisades was deliberately aimed at the wealthy population. When asked about a possible motive, he responded: “we are basically enslaved by them.”

Jonathan R. is set to appear in court on June 8. The U.S. federal prosecutor’s office continues to investigate the exact circumstances of the arson.
