A fire on an embankment on the Düsseldorf–Cologne railway line between Langenfeld and Leverkusen has paralysed one of Germany's most important rail corridors, with state security police investigating suspected sabotage.
Fire on the embankment
The embankment caught fire at two locations on Friday morning, according to Deutsche Bahn, and the blaze was extinguished by the fire department. The fire damaged several signal cables, preventing any trains from running on the affected section.
The closure has hit both regional and long-distance services hard. According to Deutsche Bahn, long-distance trains are delayed by approximately 30 minutes, and individual services have been cancelled. "Zudem fallen einzelne Züge aus," the company said. Train traffic has been impossible on the route since the incident, leaving passengers to face diversions and knock-on delays across the Rhine-Ruhr network.
