Passenger impact and Deutsche Bahn response

Deutsche Bahn said the disruptions are not expected to ease quickly. A spokesperson told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur in Berlin that "Aktuell ist noch nicht absehbar, wann der Zugverkehr wieder rollen kann." Specialists are working to repair the damage, but technical inspections of the signal systems will be required once the repairs are complete. The company warned: "Die Reparaturarbeiten werden noch mindestens bis in die heutigen Nachmittagsstunden andauern," and added: "Unsere Fachleute arbeiten bereits daran, die entstandenen Schäden so schnell wie möglich zu reparieren."

Sabotage investigation under way

Investigators are treating the blaze as a possible act of deliberate interference. A police spokesperson said on Friday that authorities are examining whether criminal activity occurred and whether the fire was deliberately set. Deutsche Bahn stated: "Die Behörden untersuchen, ob ein Eingriff Dritter vorliegt." The State Security division of the Cologne police has taken over the investigation, and ARD security experts reported that police in Leverkusen currently assume sabotage as the cause, with NRW state security (Staatsschutz) leading the inquiry. Deutsche Bahn has described the incident as vandalism.

The Düsseldorf–Cologne line is one of the most heavily used in Germany, and the closure is feeding into wider disruption across the region. Deutsche Bahn has said delays, stop cancellations and partial cancellations are to be expected in Cologne. With the cause still unestablished — a police spokesperson said on Saturday morning that there are as yet no indications of a cause — the resumption of normal services remains uncertain. The line was not expected to be fully passable again before midday at the earliest, and even after repairs, trains on the more than 65-kilometre route will initially be limited to a maximum speed of 70 km/h because the trains must compact the new ballast with their weight.

Broader disruption in NRW

The incident adds to a strained transport picture in North Rhine-Westphalia. The A4 motorway at the Köln-Eifeltor junction towards Olpe remains fully closed until Thursday, 16 July, while the Frechen-Nord junction and the Kerpen motorway interchange are also shut until Sunday, 12 July, for bridge work, and the alternative route via Dormagen has been overloaded. Separately, a five-month closure on the route from Hagen via Wuppertal to Cologne was scheduled to end on Friday evening, but delays are expected there until Monday at 05:00.

The investigation is also being set against a wider political backdrop in the state. Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) has called for additional measures to protect the population from extreme heat, as the Robert Koch Institute estimates 1,000 heat-related deaths in NRW since the beginning of the year and temperatures are forecast to reach 33 degrees on Sunday. Federal funding for a special programme on climate adaptation in social institutions has meanwhile been stopped. In Bad Münstereifel, a helper festival under the motto "Gemeinsam Stark" is being held on Saturday ahead of the fifth anniversary of the 2021 flood disaster.

The news of the rail closure was broadcast on Deutschlandfunk on 11 July 2026: "Diese Nachricht wurde am 11.07.2026 im Programm Deutschlandfunk gesendet." As of Saturday morning, the route between Düsseldorf and Cologne remained blocked, and Deutsche Bahn stressed that "Noch immer ist nicht klar, wann dort Züge wieder rollen."
