SV Darmstadt 98 has secured a hard-fought 1:0 win in the first round of the DFB-Pokal against Regionalliga side Carl Zeiss Jena, mastering the away challenge at the Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld.
The hosts from Thuringia started the cup tie boldly and created the first chance of the match early on. After Emilio Munser won the ball in the 6th minute, he fired from a central position, but was unable to beat the Darmstadt defense. The team from southern Hesse, who had entered the match as clear favorites, needed several minutes to settle into the game.
In the middle of the first half, Darmstadt gradually took control without ever really hitting their stride. Coach Florian Kohfeldt's side visibly struggled against the deep-sitting fourth-division team to create clear scoring opportunities. Jena defended disciplined and repeatedly produced counter-attacking threats.
