The 1976 concert on the eve of their wedding famously featured ABBA performing 'Dancing Queen' in honour of the bride; the golden wedding concert echoed that musical theme.

Three children, nine grandchildren — and one missing princess

Carl XVI Gustaf has been on the throne since 1973 and is the longest-reigning monarch in Sweden's history. The anniversary also marks 50 years of Silvia's tenure as Queen, a title she acquired upon her marriage to the then-reigning King. The couple's meeting predates their wedding by several years: they first crossed paths at the Olympic Games in Munich, where the German-born Silvia Sommerlath worked as a hostess. She was 'eine bürgerliche Deutsche' at the time of their engagement.

The royal couple have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, 48, Prince Carl Philip, 47, and Princess Madeleine, 44. They also have nine grandchildren. One of those grandchildren, Princess Estelle, daughter of Crown Princess Victoria, was absent from Saturday's events because she was on a language trip abroad.

Midsummer timing and visiting Norwegian royals

Among the foreign royals in Stockholm were King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway, who travelled to attend the golden wedding celebrations, though they did not take part in all scheduled programme items for health reasons. Swedish Midsummer, which the celebrations skirted, is traditionally marked by dancing around a midsummer pole, often with participants wearing flower wreaths on their heads.

In a statement reported by Swedish outlets, the palace noted that the milestone offered a moment to reflect on half a century of service. The weekend's events blended religious ceremony, public pageantry and private family time, mirroring the structure of the original 1976 wedding week. Crowds gathered along the carriage route waved Swedish flags as the couple passed, with chants of congratulations audible in televised footage of the procession.

The golden wedding concert at the Royal Opera was scheduled to feature Swedish musical acts from across the past 50 years. After the concert, the couple were to be joined by family and close friends for a private dinner.
