The Federal Office for National Economic Supply (FONES), the Swiss National Bank (SNB), card-issuing banks, payment infrastructure operators and the retail sector have jointly introduced an industry solution that allows essential goods in Switzerland to be paid for by card even offline.

The new solution enables cashless payments at retail points of sale even when conventional online payment systems fail. It is intended to ensure the supply of the population with everyday goods in crisis situations, such as large-scale power outages, cyberattacks on the payment infrastructure or natural events that disrupt network operations.

This industry solution was developed jointly by FONES, the Swiss National Bank SNB, the financial institutions as card issuers, the payment infrastructure companies and the retail sector, according to statements from the bodies involved. FONES coordinated the work between the authorities, banks and retailers.
