Klagenfurt, Austria — April 27, 2026 Villach terror suspect held as most dangerous prisoner in Austria
A 23-year-old Syrian man accused of carrying out a deadly terrorist attack in Villach, Austria, in February 2025 is being held under extreme security measures in a Klagenfurt prison, where officials describe him as the facility’s "most dangerous prisoner" ever.
High-Risk Detention and Security Measures
The suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, is awaiting trial for murder, attempted murder, and terrorist offenses related to the February 15, 2025, attack in Villach that left a 14-year-old dead and five others seriously injured. According to Josef Gramm, director of the Klagenfurt justice facility, the man is kept in a video-monitored cell with a fixed bed and has no contact with other inmates.
Gramm emphasized the unprecedented threat posed by the detainee, stating, "Er ist jederzeit bereit, Menschen zu töten" ("He is ready to kill people at any time"). The prisoner has repeatedly attempted to fashion weapons from everyday objects, including dismantling remote controls to create sharp implements. As a result, he is subjected to rigorous searches every time he leaves his cell and is escorted by two specially trained guards.
Failed Deradicalization and Trial Preparations
Efforts to deradicalize the suspect have proven unsuccessful, according to Martin Zwischenberger, a spokesperson for the justice facility. "Attempts to engage him in dialogue or rehabilitation programs have been met with complete refusal," Zwischenberger said. The suspect’s radicalization and alleged readiness for violence have complicated prison management and raised concerns about potential risks during his upcoming trial.
