Austrian teachers are increasingly choosing to accumulate overtime hours in time-off accounts rather than receiving direct pay, with recent data showing a significant rise in the use of these leave benefits.

Rising Use of Time-Off Accounts

Since 2009, teachers under the old employment contract have had the option to credit overtime hours to a time-off account instead of receiving payment. These credits can later be used for leave, with at least 50% of the accumulated time required to be taken as time off. In the 2024/25 school year, 402 teachers at federal schools (including academic and vocational institutions) used their time-off credits, equivalent to approximately 226,300 weekly work units.

This marks a notable increase from the previous year, when 134,400 weekly work units were claimed, and a sharp rise from 2019/20, when only 87,300 units were utilized. Paul Kimberger, head of the teachers' union (FCG), remarked on the trend, stating, "Es ist Zahltag" ("It’s payday"), in comments to the APA.
