Ten years ago, a coup attempt against Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Turkey failed; since then, the president has systematically disempowered the armed forces and expanded his own power base.

On July 15 and 16, 2016, parts of the Turkish military attempted to overthrow the government of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The coup attempt failed after bloody clashes in which hundreds of people were killed. Erdoğan survived the crisis and subsequently used it for an unprecedented reshaping of the state.

Security expert Peter R. Neumann takes stock of the anniversary in a column for the Tagesspiegel. He writes that Erdoğan drew the most important political lesson of his life from the shock of 2016. This resulted in a systematic weakening of the armed forces, which in Turkey were traditionally regarded as the guardians of the secular order.
