Around 1,800 people demonstrated in Berlin-Wedding on Saturday afternoon under the motto "Wedding ohne Waffen. Gemeinsam gegen Krieg." against arms production and weapons exports.
The protest march started at Hanne-Sobek-Platz near the S- and U-Bahn station Gesundbrunnen and moved, according to the organizers, toward the Berlin Rheinmetall site. According to police, around 1,800 demonstrators took part in the protest march. The Berlin police told dpa of "insgesamt rund 1.800 Menschen" who had walked along in the demonstration.
Number of participants and course of events
Among the participants was Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. The organizers had registered the rally under the slogan "Wedding ohne Waffen. Gemeinsam gegen Krieg." The demonstration was tied to a series of earlier protest actions that had repeatedly taken place in recent months at or on the Berlin site of the arms company Rheinmetall.
According to police, the demonstration proceeded largely without disruption. At the same time, the officers registered several criminal offenses. Participants had, as they said, "Teilnehmer sich vermummt" as well as "Pyrotechnik gezündet." In addition, "strafbare Parolen gerufen" had been shouted. Police initially did not provide specific information on the number of offenses or possible arrests.
