BERLIN, May 4, 2026 German parties SPD Greens Left leave X platform

Three German political parties—the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Greens, and the Left—have jointly announced their departure from Elon Musk's social media platform X, citing its role in spreading disinformation and fostering toxic debates.

Platform Under Fire

The parties accused X, formerly known as Twitter, of descending into chaos since Musk's $44 billion acquisition in 2022. They argued that the platform has increasingly become a hub for misinformation and aggressive discourse. Pegah Edalatian, the political managing director of the German Greens, spearheaded the move to leave X, describing it as a "Einfallstor für Desinformation und eine aggressive Debattenkultur" ("gateway for disinformation and an aggressive debate culture").
