Widespread thunderstorms swept across the German state of Hesse over the weekend, triggering severe weather warnings, flooding a major road, and causing scattered damage in several cities.
The German Weather Service (DWD) issued severe weather warnings for strong thunderstorms, particularly in the Kassel district, as the storms moved through on Friday and Saturday. Northern, central, and western Hesse were primarily affected during those days, before the system expanded into southern Hesse on Sunday.
Hessian broadcaster hr meteorologist Tim Staeger described the situation on Sunday. "Aktuell ziehen verbreitet Gewitter über Hessen - mit Schwerpunkt in der Südhälfte," he said, noting that widespread thunderstorms were moving across the state with a focus on the southern half.
