Thunderstorms Sweep Across Hesse, Causing Flooding and Minor Damage

Flooding and Road Closures

The stormy weather led to disruptions on the ground. The B83 road in Hofgeismar-Hümme was closed in the afternoon due to flooding, authorities confirmed. In Marburg, water undercut Graf-von-Stauffenberg-Straße, creating a hole approximately 40 centimeters in diameter in the asphalt.

In Frankfurt, the storms knocked over construction fences and site barriers, and a tree fell at the Katharinenkreisel traffic circle. Across the region, Hessian police headquarters and fire departments reported some fallen trees and flooded basements.

Despite the dramatic weather, officials said the state escaped relatively unscathed. Police headquarters stated unanimously on Sunday that Hesse got off lightly, with mostly only light storm damage. Police in Central Hesse reported a total of 15 storm-related deployments over the weekend.

Calmer Weather Ahead

Temperatures reached up to 32 degrees Celsius on Saturday, contributing to the unstable atmospheric conditions. On Sunday, maximum temperatures were expected to reach 28 degrees Celsius before the storms moved through.

Staeger forecast that the thunderstorms would move eastward overnight, bringing relief. "In der Nacht ziehen die Gewitter nach Osten ab und von Westen beruhigt sich das Wetter," he said, predicting that the weather would calm from the west.

The outlook for Monday is much improved. Sun and clouds are expected to alternate across Hesse, with only isolated showers and conditions remaining mostly dry. Maximum temperatures are forecast between 23 and 27 degrees Celsius, dropping to around 20 degrees in higher elevations.

Overnight into Monday, precipitation is expected to taper off, with temperatures cooling to between 10 and 14 degrees Celsius. However, the unsettled pattern may return later in the week, with thunderstorms possible again on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Staeger explained that no further severe storms like those of the weekend are expected in the cooler air mass that will settle over the region. Daytime highs on Tuesday and Wednesday are forecast to reach between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius, with higher elevations around 18 degrees.
