A pro-Tibetan activist set himself on fire in front of the UN headquarters in New York and died from his injuries, while a controversial law aimed at strengthening national identity came into force in China.
The incident occurred on Wednesday in front of the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. According to the AFP news agency, the activist set himself on fire at the same time a law passed by the National People's Congress in March came into force in China. According to official statements, the law aims to create a "common" national identity in China and strengthen "cohesion."
Reaction from the United Nations
A spokesperson for António Guterres told AFP that he was "bestürzt über den tragischen und schrecklichen Vorfall." The UN headquarters thus responded to an action that was intended to draw international attention to the fate of Tibet and other ethnic minorities in China.
