The illness of Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer has sparked a fundamental debate in Austria about the duty of transparency that politicians owe to the public.

The discussion has been ignited by the question of how far the obligation to disclose extends when a government member is temporarily absent for health reasons. Advocates of a broad duty to inform argue that citizens have a right to be informed about the health of their elected representatives.

In a statement, Marterbauer's circle issued a clear appeal: "Marterbauer bittet, offen, aber fair und respektvoll mit seiner Erkrankung umzugehen." It is part of the transparency mandate of contemporary politics that politicians also disclose matters that fall within the most personal sphere of life.
