The Trump administration filed a lawsuit on Sunday seeking to block certification of Alaska’s Senate election results while Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the legal challenge.

The lawsuit concerns the closely watched Alaska Senate race between Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan and Democrat Mary Peltola. The administration asked a court to prevent the state from certifying the result without examining whether confusion between two candidates with similar names may have affected the outcome.

Blanche said on Sunday that the legal challenge was a necessary step to prevent voter confusion in the race. He argued that the two candidates’ similar names made it important to examine whether some voters cast ballots for the wrong person.
