Ken Paxton, the scandal-plagued Texas Attorney General, defeated incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the Republican primary runoff on Tuesday, propelled by a late endorsement from Donald Trump.
With roughly two-thirds of Republican primary voters favoring Paxton, the result marks a decisive victory for the Trump-aligned wing of the party and a stinging rebuke of Cornyn, a longtime fixture in Washington who had occasionally criticized the former president.
Trump publicly endorsed Paxton the previous week, calling him a 'real MAGA warrior who has ALWAYS delivered for Texas'. The endorsement came at the last moment before the runoff and proved decisive in a race that shattered spending records, with over 120 million dollars poured into the campaign, mostly on television advertising.
