Trump imposes 50 percent tariffs on Canadian imports – dispute with neighboring country intensifies

Trump justified the measure on the one hand with the allegation that Canada discriminates against US cars, alcohol, and dairy products. Trump stated that the air pollution caused by the fires incurred high costs in the US that would "inevitably" have to be added to the existing tariffs on Canadian imports.

Wildfires as additional justification

AP quoted a government official saying that Trump had instructed his advisors to examine additional tariffs against Canada. According to the same official, one of the reasons for the new tariffs is that the Canadian wildfires had affected air quality in the US.

A temporary warning for poor air quality was issued for Friday in Washington, D.C., as a smell of fires lingered in the air. In large parts of the northeastern US, plumes of smoke had been visible the previous week, traced back to dozens of wildfires in neighboring Canada.

Earlier threats already

The tensions between the two neighboring countries are not new. Trump had threatened Canada with higher tariffs on his platform Truth Social just a few days earlier – for a different reason. In the past, Trump had repeatedly threatened tariffs but ultimately did not implement them.

The unusual justification via the wildfires is noteworthy. Trump had repeatedly addressed the smoke development in the US states along the Canadian border in recent months and blamed Canada for it. The linkage of a trade policy instrument with an environmental phenomenon is unusual and is likely to meet with criticism in Ottawa.

Exceptions were agreed for strategically important goods. Energy products, potash, fish, and critical minerals are not affected by the 50 percent tariff. Canada is an important supplier of these raw materials for US industry, particularly for agriculture and energy supply.

Observers point out that Trump has repeatedly threatened high tariffs in the past without ultimately implementing them. Whether the now-announced 50 percent will actually take effect on August 19 is therefore not certain.
