US President Donald Trump opened the official celebrations for the 250th birthday of the United States on Wednesday evening on the National Mall in Washington with a campaign-like speech and extensive self-praise.

In front of several thousand spectators — most of them Trump supporters wearing MAGA caps and US flags — the opening program for the anniversary celebrations surrounding Independence Day on July 4 began Wednesday evening on the National Mall between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy opened the event and honored Trump with the words that he «ist der grossartigste Präsident, den dieses Land seit George Washington je hatte». Afterward, Alexis Wilkins, the partner of FBI Director Kash Patel, sang the national anthem, before country musician Lee Greenwood performed the song «God Bless the USA», which had regularly been played at Trump's campaign events.
