WASHINGTON, April 12, 2026 U.S. President Donald Trump announced an immediate naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, escalating tensions with Iran and threatening severe retaliation against any Iranian attacks on U.S. or commercial ships.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical shipping routes for global oil trade, will now be under a U.S. Navy blockade, effectively restricting the passage of vessels. The move comes amid heightened hostilities between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, which have already reduced maritime traffic through the strait to a trickle. The disruption has triggered a spike in global energy and commodity prices, with analysts warning of further economic fallout.
Trump also ordered the U.S. Navy to destroy Iranian-laid mines in the strait, accusing Tehran of attempting to disrupt international shipping. "Every Iranian who shoots at us or at peaceful ships will be hunted down to hell," Trump declared in a statement, using the original German phrasing: *"Jeder Iraner, der auf uns oder auf friedliche Schiffe schießt, wird zur Hölle gejagt."*
