Donald Trump has again threatened military action against Oman, a US partner in the Gulf, as a dispute between the United States and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz drags into a new phase.

The latest escalation came after Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the Speaker of Iran's Parliament and a negotiator in prior talks with the United States, laid out a series of demands that Tehran says must be satisfied before the strategic waterway can be reopened. Qalibaf said the strait would stay closed "until the United States fulfills its commitments under the agreement, including lifting the blockade, releasing frozen assets, lifting oil sanctions, ending threats and military operations on all fronts, and implementing the other conditions it committed to."
