UEFA puts FIFA President Infantino under pressure with formal letter

The background to the escalation is the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project, which has been controversial for months. It concerns a commercial initiative through which FIFA aims to tap additional revenue sources. According to previous reports, technology investor Joshua Kushner was supposed to take on a key role in the venture through his investment firm Thrive. This connection is now at the center of UEFA's inquiries.

Background: The FIFA Forward Enterprise project

From circles within European associations, it was reported that UEFA's leadership wanted to review FIFA's compliance with association law and financial standards. A spokesperson for the European umbrella body stated that "klare Erwartungen an Transparenz und Compliance" had been formulated. FIFA had no initial comment.

Observers view the move as the sharpest signal UEFA has sent to Infantino since he took office. The hurdle of formally confronting a FIFA president in this way is considered high — both politically and legally.

Critics have long accused FIFA of acting opaquely on major projects such as FFE and of inadequately disclosing political and business interests. UEFA has previously called for reforms to improve oversight of international football associations.

Criticism from Europe: Rettig and the league representatives

Football official Andreas Rettig recently publicly criticized that for FFE, "bisher weder Mandat noch Kontrolle" had been sufficiently clarified. At the same time, voices from the European leagues warn that a failure or delay of FFE could further burden the already strained financial situation of some national associations. The funds from the regular FIFA Forward program, which supports smaller associations, would not, however, be directly affected.

Next week, an extraordinary UEFA meeting is expected in Nyon, at which the member associations are to deliberate on the next steps. If FIFA does not submit the requested documents on time, UEFA could formally escalate at the level of the world governing body.

According to insiders, UEFA is also examining whether additional compliance opinions should be requested. This would further increase the pressure on Infantino, who has been seeking public calm since the Kushner connection became known.

One thing is certain: with the formal letter, UEFA has at least partially taken over interpretive control of the Infantino case. The coming days are considered decisive in determining whether the conflict will be played out within the FIFA family or carried onto the global stage of world football.
