LONDON, May 12, 2026

UK Health Minister Wes Streeting resigned on Thursday, becoming the first senior minister to publicly call for a leadership contest to oust Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Leadership Crisis Deepens

Wes Streeting’s resignation marks a significant escalation in Labour’s internal turmoil, just under two years after Starmer won a large majority with promises of stability. In his resignation letter, Streeting wrote, "It is now clear … that Labour MPs and Labour unions want the debate about what comes next to be a battle of ideas, not of personalities or petty factionalism."
