Ukrainian media publish corruption investigation despite court ban

Background of the investigation

At the center of the investigation are real estate transactions involving the brother of SBI director Sukhachov. According to the investigative platform Slidstvo.Info and the anti-corruption organization ANTAC, the brother of the SBI chief allegedly acquired 143 properties. The State Bureau of Investigation is, among other things, responsible for the prosecution of judges and military personnel and thus plays a particularly sensitive role in the Ukrainian justice system.

The Ukrainian broadcaster Suspilne, one of the participating media outlets, described the publication ban as censorship. In a statement, Suspilne declared: „Wir betrachten dieses Verbot als einen eklatanten Akt der Zensur" and emphasized that it was necessary „zusammen mit anderen die Ergebnisse der Recherche zu herauszugeben". The joint publication was understood as a signal to the public and to the judiciary that the newsrooms would not bow to a ban.

Reactions from media and press freedom organizations

International organizations also reacted to the incident. The Committee to Protect Journalists spoke of a „beispiellosen juristischen Manöver" and warned of „schwerwiegende Folgen für die Pressefreiheit". The assessment points to a fundamental concern: if courts can preemptively prevent critical reporting on public officials, the watchdog function of the media is undermined.

The case comes at a time when corruption in Ukraine is being discussed as one of the biggest obstacles on the path to EU membership. Ukraine is pursuing EU membership, and Brussels as well as several member states have repeatedly pointed out in recent years the need for an independent judiciary and functioning anti-corruption structures.
