Berlin, April 12, 2026

Union Berlin has made history by appointing Marie-Louise Eta as the first female head coach in the German Bundesliga, replacing Steffen Baumgart after a string of poor results.

The 32-year-old former player, who previously served as an assistant coach for the club, will take charge until the end of the season. Her promotion comes after Union Berlin’s 3-1 loss to Heidenheim, marking their second win in 14 games since the winter break. The team currently sits seven points above the relegation zone.

A Trailblazing Appointment

Eta’s appointment breaks new ground in German football, where no woman has previously held a head coaching role in the men’s top flight. Her credentials include a successful playing career with Turbine Potsdam, where she won three German championships and the 2010 Champions League title.

Her career was cut short at age 26 due to injuries, but she transitioned into coaching, earning her Pro-Lizenz-Lehrgang certification in 2022. This qualification authorizes her to lead teams in both the Bundesliga and 2. Liga. Eta joined Union Berlin’s coaching staff in November 2023 and has been a key figure behind the scenes.

Challenges Ahead

Union Berlin’s decision to part ways with Baumgart reflects the urgency of their situation. The team’s recent form has been dismal, with just two victories since the winter break. Eta’s immediate task will be to stabilize the squad and secure their Bundesliga status.
