1. FC Union Berlin lost a friendly match against Regionalliga side FC Carl Zeiss Jena 0:2 (0:1) on Saturday at the Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld, with centre-back Maxim Hessel apparently sustaining a serious knee injury.
In front of 7,015 spectators, including around 850 travelling Union supporters, the Bundesliga side fell behind as early as the 12th minute. Elias Löder exploited a build-up error by the Berlin side and converted from eight metres out to put the hosts ahead. The match was part of FC Carl Zeiss Jena's season opener and simultaneously Union's fourth friendly of pre-season.
Match flow: Early deficit and post misfortune
Union had an early chance to take the lead as early as the 3rd minute through Aljoscha Kemlein, but he was denied by FCC goalkeeper Marius Liesegang, who parried the shot from eight metres with his foot. In the 39th minute, Oliver Burke struck only the post after a one-two combination; Liesegang was able to gather the rebound.
