Meschede, June 1, 2026

At the CDU meeting in Meschede, North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister-President Hendrik Wüst demonstratively strengthened Chancellor Friedrich Merz's back and dismissed rumors of a change of chancellor as nonsense.

Meschede as a stage for cohesion

On Monday, Wüst received the Chancellor at the "Welcome Hotel" on the Hennesee in Meschede in the Sauerland region for a retreat of the North Rhine-Westphalia CDU state association. The meeting had been planned for months, but was thrust into the center of political interest by media reports about alleged considerations within the Union to remove Merz from the Chancellery during the current legislative period. In several reports, Wüst was named as the most promising successor candidate. The Minister-President again emphatically rejected this in Merz's presence.
