University Hospital Zurich: Report Confirms Serious Allegations in Cardiac Surgery

In 13 cases, a medical product was used improperly, including the Cardioband developed by Maisano. Eleven deaths were classified as medically unexplained. The incidents were reported to the public prosecutor's office for review of potential criminal violations.

Lack of Oversight and Personnel Consequences

The report sharply criticizes the fact that Francesco Maisano was appointed clinic director in 2014 without sufficient verification of his qualifications and potential conflicts of interest. Hospital management failed to establish adequate oversight mechanisms and recognize warning signs in a timely manner.

André Zemp, president of the hospital board, expressed dismay at the findings: "The results have deeply affected us." He announced the establishment of a special counseling center for those affected. Three members of the hospital board resigned to allow for a fresh start in personnel.

Under new leadership, the USZ's cardiac surgery department has since regained high-quality standards, and the mortality rate is now within the normal range.
