Between 2016 and 2020, the cardiac surgery department at the University Hospital Zurich (USZ) experienced serious misconduct and unexpected deaths, as confirmed by a newly released report.

Higher Mortality Rate and Problematic Procedures

The report reveals that the mortality rate in the cardiac surgery clinic during the investigated period was significantly higher than in comparable university hospitals. Out of approximately 4,500 surgeries, 68 to 74 more deaths were recorded than statistically expected. A total of over 300 deaths occurring during the tenure of then-clinic director Francesco Maisano were examined. Among these, 75 problematic procedures and 64 unexpected deaths were identified.
