WASHINGTON, May 9, 2026
The United States is awaiting Iran's response to a proposal aimed at ending the conflict between the two nations, with President Donald Trump expecting an answer by the end of the day.
Diplomatic Moves Amid Ceasefire
The US and Iran are considering diplomatic talks following recent military confrontations, including attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. The US has submitted a 14-point declaration of intent, which seeks to establish a 30-day negotiation framework to end the war. The proposal includes discussions on easing US sanctions and agreements regarding the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has shown a rare willingness to discuss its nuclear program, a key point of contention. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed hope that Iran's response would be a serious offer. "We will soon find out," President Trump said when asked if Iran is delaying negotiations.
